Zahir Cocker is a small familiar kennel showing and breeding healthy, merry, typical English Cocker Spaniels. All our dogs lives with us at home and they are first our beloved companions of life. We are extremely passioned for this breed and we don't want to produce dogs as a factory, we take care of quality inspite of quantity. We don't have litters with no reason, but we always try to do our best to give a real contribution to our beloved breed. Occasionally we have high quality puppies or youngsters. We could have litters once a year, at least two, or none if our dogs are too young, too old or busy with shows or hunting tests.
This is what we would achieve with our breeding: 1) HEALTHY dogs: all our dogs are tested for the ereeditary diseases typical of the breed, such as FN and PRA. Breeding Helthy dogs for us means not only have dogs who are externally healthy, but also genetically clear. Our dogs, as for the dogs we will choose for matings, will necessary be tested as CLEAR and we will never use carriers, this means that from their combination will never give affected dogs, and the progeny will never pass the genetic anomaly to their progeny. This rule, also well defined in the FCI breeders code, is ABSOLUTE regarding FN (Familiar Nefropathy): only this way we can struggle against this terrible disease, eliminating it from bloodlines (---> would you like to know more about FN? <--- ). This rule is absolutely the same for prcd-PRA, but it's also important in a serious breeding program to estimate the frequency of the disease in the breed. It's estimated that FN involves 14% Cockers population. Prcd-PRA involves over 50%. In this particular case the elimination of this anomaly should be done very carefully. The elimination from reproduction of all the carrier could make too poor genetic pool, and the risk is to loose the genetic diversity and the arrival of new diseases. This is why, EXCEPTIONALLY, in our breeding program we don't exclude the inclusion of prcd-pra carriers for breeding if their overall qualities justify this, but only in combination with a genetically normal/clear partner! This way we will have healthy puppies who will NEVER develop the disease (-->would you like to know more about prcd-PRA? <--- ).
Puppies of such combinations will be monitored during their lives and we could decide not to sell them or just to gave promising puppies to people in whom we trust.Of course we officially test our dogs also for HD. We would like to remember that in HD disease we have not only genetical but also environmental elements that can cause it, so there is no breeder who can assure you that a dog will never develop the disease, also if their parents have the best degree. What a breeder can do is to work on the best possible combination of matings in terms of degress, and keep informed about the status of hips of what he has produced, in order to prefer the best bloodlines, and inform also all the future owners on wich precaution they should use in order not to favour the environmental factors which can ruin dog's hips. 2) TYPICAL dogs: selectionned for beauty and functionality. All our dogs are usually shown and judged by various judges, and they are engaged in field tests in order to preserve their precious istinct. We believe that a Cocker should be encourage in his feelings abot hunting, also if Cockers can stay also very happily with you on the sofa. 3) VERY GOOD TEMPERAMENT: we desidere to produce only puppies with a wonderful temperament, merry, enthusiast and never aggressive or frightening. Altought here in Italy people can choose to dock tails, we don't agree about it because we believe that tail is very important for the dog, for his equilibre and communication. So all our cockers will have their wonderful long tail :)
